This was one of the earliest double role films and featured Dev Anand in a dual role. The misunderstandings and the drama that ensued because of the identical faces of two distinct characters made for a great watch.

2. Ram Aur Shyam (1967)

Dilip Kumar rocked the show in this flick and it became a memorable film, thanks to its plot, performances and music. It also served as an inspiration to other films like Seeta Aur Geeta and Chaalbaaz.

5. Angoor (1982)

It is based on Shakespeare's play ‘The Comedy of Errors’ and was directed by Gulzar. It boasted of intelligent humour and was not exactly a masala film. Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma both had double roles and the misunderstandings that arose is highly entertaining.

6. Chaalbaaz (1989)

7. Aankhen (1993)

The highest grossing film of 1993 had Govinda in a double role along with Chunky Pandey playing a parallel lead that brought the house down. That it was directed by David Dhawan also helped the film turn into a great comic caper.

8. Gopi Kishan (1994)

Action star Suniel Shetty got a chance to jump into double role bandwagon with this flick, which entertained viewers a lot. It featured Suniel Shetty as a hardened criminal Kishan and a good-for-nothing cop Gopi and the madness that erupted in the film is damn good.

9. Karan Arjun (1995)

This film had Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan play dutiful sons in a village who get killed and their reincarnated avatars come and take revenge. The plot was loved and no wonder, this superb well-made flick is considered one of the greatest films of Bollywood. Its dialogue ‘Mere Karan Arjun aayenge’ is unforgettable.

10. Judwaa (1997)

Salman Khan played two entertaining roles – the street-smart thief Raja and the well-mannered Prem – in this highly entertaining flick. It is directed by David Dhawan, who also made Aankhen, and he proved that he’s a pro when it comes to such films. Besides comedy, the film also had some great emotional scenes. And the music is evergreen!

11. Duplicate (1998)

This might not be a memorable film of Shah Rukh Khan. But it has its moments and the way he essayed the demure Bablu and the evil Manu Dada was highly impressive.

12. Dushman (1998)

Kajol delivered a stupendous performance in this intense drama in her dual roles. Ashutosh Rana walked away with a lot of praise but one can’t deny that Kajol also did a very fine job. However her double role didn’t end her as Kajol went on to play a double role of sisters in Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi.

13. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998)

This was the first box office hit of Amitabh Bachchan since his comeback after a few years of hiatus from Bollywood. He and Govinda were lovely in both the roles. David Dhawan helmed the film and we wonder why he isn’t called the double role films expert

14. Sooryavansham (1999)

Amitabh Bachchan played double role of a father and son in this flick that ultimately flopped at the box office. But it achieved a cult status on television and is played every week. Yet, it gets good ratings which speaks volumes about its popularity!

The remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s Don, it featured Shah Rukh Khan at its sexiest best as the suave gangster. As Vijay too, he rocked. The twist in the climax gave a huge jolt to the viewers!

It featured Hrithik Roshan playing Rohan as well as Krrish and he was amazing in both the roles. Both share screen space in the finale of Krrish that was highly amazing. In Krrish 3, both get much better scope and the climax, wherein Roshan sacrifices himself, is highly moving.

18. Om Shanti Om (2007)

This was not just another reincarnation drama. It was laced with great entertainment quotient, dialogues, action, music, drama and emotions. Shah Rukh Khan was super-cool in both the avatars.

19. Kaminey (2009)

Shahid Kapoor got into a different league with this film. Both the characters essayed by him had speech disorders - Guddu used to stammer while Charlie used to lisp. But both the avatars were sensitively portrayed that earned Shahid and the film a lot of praise.

20. Ra.One (2011)

What’s interesting is that the second avatar of Shah Rukh Khan is from the gaming world, which makes Ra.One a one of its kind film. This isn’t considered as a memorable film in terms of Shah Rukh’s performance. But the VFX-driven flick is remembered for doing something different, though sadly it didn’t work big time.

21. Rowdy Rathore (2012)

Rowdy Rathore’s trailer just gave hints that there’s going to be double role fun in the film. Hence, when the lookalike element was introduced, it took audiences by surprise. Prabhu Dheva’s direction and Akshay Kumar’s performance was first-rate, making Rowdy Rathore one of the best entertainers in recent times. The actor also played a double in Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995) wherein he essayed the role of Lallu a villager as well as his brother, Inspector Vijay.

It’s rare for an actor to take up double role character in his second film itself. But that’s what Arjun Kapoor did and although the film wasn’t impressive, his performance was appreciated.

23. Dhoom 3 (2013)

Perfectionist Aamir Khan rocked the show as he played two distinct characters with élan and perfection. The beauty of the film is that till mid-way, one doesn’t even realize that there’s a double role and once the suspense is unveiled, it takes the film to another level.

24. Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015)

The powerhouse performer Kangana Ranaut also took up the double role challenge, with this entertaining flick. As Tanu, she was fiery and killer while as Datto, she was vivacious and accented. Both characters were drastically different and Kangana essayed them brilliantly. It was rare film to cross Rs. 100 crores just on the basis of its heroine.

25. Mubarkan (2017)

Arjun Kapoor played dual roles yet again with Mubarakan and proved why he’s one of the most versatile actors around. Aurangzeb was too serious but in Mubarakan, the actor had fun and also ensured that viewers had fun and exited the theatre with a smile!
