Importance of Using Good Food Packaging Material
We buy, sell, and consume different food products everyday. A lot has been said about the health benefits of various types of food products available in the market.
But rarely do we think about the packaging that is used to cover the food material.
Food packaging material plays an important role in the food industry.
FMCG literally means Fast-Moving Consumer Goods. Goods that are transported, sold and consumed quickly. The food is transferred to locations which may have a different climatic condition than the source of production. Since transportation forms an important part in the FMCG industry, the food packaging material used to contain the food needs a careful study before transferring food materials.

Food packaging protects food from Physical, Chemical and Environmental factors that could possibly contaminate food if not packaged properly. Purchasing a food packet with a broken seal and improper packaging could invite many possible harmful effects. Manufacturers should use the latest technologies to pack food products. The machines should be specially designed to keep away air, dirt and harmful chemical products.

Food industries need to be careful about every aspect of packaging like materials used, printing ink, and the inner lining of material in which the food is stored. Ignoring these important aspects may lead food material getting poisoned by reacting with the chemicals used in packaging. Industries should not only be aware of the hazards but should also be ready to take remedial measures to counter the errorsthat may occur.

● Easy Transportation - We see different types of containers been used to store food materials like bottles, boxes, tins, bags etc. The purpose of using such diverse packing is that packaging decides the ease of transportation. The type of food decides the packaging materials. Plastic bottles are used to transport liquid beverages, jute bags are used to transport grains and vegetables. It prevents food from external factors like dust, air, sunlight and other harmful agents. The packaging also needs to consider the climatic conditions in which the food is been transported. If the journey is short, insulating materials can be used to preserve food but during the long journey the food must be stored in cool temperatures and the packaging must be able to handle that temperature. The packages must be designed keeping transportation conditions in mind. It must also possess some information guiding the methods to handle the product.

It helps communicate your message and information about the product inside. Information like nutritional content, storage method, cooking instructions, shelf life, cost which helps you provide complete information about your product. With design, packages must also consider the form, function and safety of the food product. Colour, Text and Pattern should be chosen wisely according to your branding message and the product inside. For most people packaging is the guarantee of safety and convenience. A package is the first thing a consumer communicate when interacting with your brand. Many customers purchase the product after seeing the packet design. Quality packagingis important to influence customer decisions. Food packagingis an integral part of marketing strategy for FMCG Industry. In a way, packet design drives customer loyalty and increase sales immensely.

Based on the form of a product whether it is solid, liquid or gas the container is decided. Example - Plastic is used to store frozen foods, fish, meat, vegetables. Technical advancements in the food industry such as the addition of antioxidants in food packages are increasing the shelf life and nutritional value of the product. The antioxidant can be added to the walls of the container during the manufacturing process before coming in direct contact of the food.

● Quality and Innovation - Today food industry is seeking constant innovation both in food processing and packaging. Manufacturers now can guarantee all food specifications and requirements. It has also become easy to ship products in areas with severe weather conditions without compromising the quality of the food. Advancements in food packaging have also made it possible to store easily degradable food for a longer period of time. With environment crisis on the rise, new recyclable and organic designs are coming into the picture each day. The consumers today have a strong appetite for innovative designs and thus a mixture of safe and smart packaging can take FMCG industry to a new level of sophistication. With the growing trend of e-commerce, food packaging is taking an interesting turn as consumer judges the quality of products based on what they receive in hands, especially food products like fruits and vegetables.

In conclusion, I would like to say that food packaging plays an integral part in the FMCG industry. Food industries need to understand that packaging is not just a vessel but also adds value to the core product quality. Recent technological advancements include edible packaging, smart packaging, anti-microbial packaging, etc. With each advancement, the food packagings are getting smarter and safer. We are moving towards environment-friendly packagings. Packages that avoid wastage of food and money.
